Backpacking Trip Length Calculator
Know a route’s distance and climbing? This tells you how many days you need, how far to hike each day, and how hard each day will feel. It uses the same loaded-backpacker pace math as the Trailfold planner.
Pace is your comfortable flat-ground miles per day. Steep days below are automatically shortened so the effort stays even.
How this calculator works
It uses “effort miles”: every 1,000 ft of climbing counts like an extra mile of flat walking, because uphill is what actually tires you out. Your route’s total effort is split into even daily chunks based on your pace, so a day with a big climb covers fewer real miles than an easy day.
Hiking time assumes about 2 mph with a loaded pack, plus an extra hour for every ~2,000 ft of gain. That’s moving time, so add your own breaks, water stops, and camp setup.
Want the exact numbers for a specific route instead of a total?Draw it in Trailfoldand it snaps to real trails, pulls elevation, and breaks the trip into days at your campsites automatically.
