Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Trailfold, a web app for planning backpacking trips. Please read them carefully — especially the sections on third-party data and the assumption of risk for backcountry travel.

1. Acceptance of These Terms

By creating an account or using Trailfold, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. The Service

Trailfold lets you draw custom routes, mark campsites, review per-day mileage, elevation, and difficulty, view 3D terrain, import and export GPX files, and share trips. Trip planning is free, and we intend to keep planning free. A future paid tier (“Pro,” expected around $20/year) will unlock taking your maps offline. Billing is not live yet, and nothing here obligates you to pay for anything today. Details of Pro, including price and features, may change before launch.

3. Accounts and Your Responsibilities

You sign in with an email and password or with Google. You are responsible for keeping your password and your email or Google account secure, for activity under your account, and for providing accurate information. You must be at least 13 years old to use Trailfold.

4. Your Content

The trips you create — routes, campsites, names, and dates — are your content, and you own it. When you choose to share a trip publicly to the Discover feed, you grant Trailfold a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, store, and display that trip to other members for the purpose of operating the feed. This license ends when you make the trip private or delete it, subject to copies already saved or cached by others. You are responsible for the content you create and share.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use Trailfold for any unlawful purpose or to encourage unsafe or illegal activity.
  • Post content that is infringing, misleading, or that misrepresents trail conditions or public-land access.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, scrape, or reverse-engineer the service, or abuse the third-party data providers we rely on.
  • Misuse another member’s shared trips or attempt to access accounts or data that are not yours.

6. Third-Party Data and No Warranty

Trailfold assembles maps, trail data, elevation, difficulty ratings, permits, and park information from third-party sources, including OpenStreetMap, Photon, OpenTopoMap, BRouter, AWS Terrain Tiles, the U.S. National Park Service API, and the Recreation.gov API. This information is provided “as is,” may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate, and all distances, elevations, and difficulty ratings are estimates.

Trailfold is a planning tool, not a safety or navigation device. Do not rely on it as your sole source of navigation or safety information in the backcountry. Always verify routes, conditions, permits, closures, and regulations with official sources and the agency that manages the land you intend to visit before and during your trip. Carry appropriate maps, navigation tools, and emergency equipment.

Assumption of risk. Backcountry and wilderness travel is inherently dangerous. You are solely responsible for your own safety and decision-making, for those in your party, and for evaluating whether a planned trip is appropriate for your experience, fitness, and conditions. By using Trailfold, you knowingly assume these risks.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Trailfold and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any injury, loss, or harm arising from your use of the service, from reliance on third-party data, or from backcountry travel planned with the service. The service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind.

8. Termination

You may stop using Trailfold and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these terms or misuse the service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — including third-party data disclaimers, assumption of risk, and limitation of liability — will continue to apply.

9. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms as Trailfold evolves — for example, when the Pro tier and billing go live. We will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you of material changes. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.

10. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.
